ACTIVITIES/EVENTS

District Meeting

District 42 invites all A.A. members to attend the district meeting held at 7:00 PM on the second Tuesday of each month at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1370 Defense Highway, Gambrills, MD.

The next meeting will be on September 14.

District Elections

A new DCM and new treasurer were elected at the November 2009 District 42 meeting.  The positions up for election were DCM, Alternate DCM, Secretary, and Treasurer, but there were not enough candidates present for Alternate DCM and Secretary.  The secretary position has since been filled, but we still need an Alternate DCM.  District 42 jobs present a terrific opportunity for you or someone you sponsor.  You can come to the next district meeting and volunteer, or email the DCM at dcm@mdaadistrict42.org to find out more.

Whether or not you are looking for a service position, any A.A. member can come to the monthly meeting and see how the district's business is conducted.

Grapevine Representative (GVR)

District 42 now has a Grapevine Representative.  If you have any questions about the Grapevine magazine or other Grapevine publications or how to get them you can contact the GVR by email gvr@mdaadistrict42.org or by writing to:

District 42
P.O. Box 3623
Crofton, MD 21114.

 Newcomer Packets

The district has prepared newcomer packets to be placed where they can be noticed and picked up by people in need of help with an alcohol problem.  Each packet contains a back issue of the Grapevine magazine, a copy of the pamphlet A Newcomer Asks, and a list of A.A. meetings in District 42.  GSRs and other volunteers will leave the packets in waiting rooms and lobbies of doctors' offices, hotels, law offices, and wherever else someone may want to reach out for "the hand of A.A."  New packets will be prepared as the supply on hand is depleted.

Workshop

The district held a workshop on “What The Heck Is A GSR?” (General Service Representative) on Saturday, June 5, 2010.

A panel of speakers from the Area 29 (Maryland General Service) Workshop Committee gave fascinating and sometimes moving personal accounts of their experiences as “trusted servants” in A. A. service, including GSR.  The panelists made the duties, activities, and responsibilities of an A. A. group’s GSR and the GSR’s importance as the group’s sole connection with A. A. as a whole increasingly clear throughout the workshop.

Everyone came away from the workshop with a deeper appreciation for the value of service work at any level from group coffee maker to area delegate.  The presentations vividly illustrated what a help any alcoholic’s involvement in A. A. service can be in maintaining long-term sobriety.

Attendees later commented that they found the workshop "very informative," showing that service "maintains the integrity of the fellowship for those yet to come," "liked the Q&A at the end," "learned that the Service Manual for Maryland General Service contains answers to many of my questions," learned the "importance of involvement," and found "so many are eager to help" a new GSR.

Future District 42 workshops will be announced here well in advance so you can make plans to attend.  You won’t want to miss them.
